Course Overview

Workers with this qualification have tradesperson-level skills in the manufacture and/or installation of products, including furniture and cabinetry, made from timber and other materials.

They have core skills in tool use, measuring, drawing (including computer-aided design), interpreting work documentation, preparing cutting lists, communication, teamwork, and safe and environmentally sustainable work practices. They may have specialised skills in wood machining, cabinet and furniture making, kitchen and bathroom construction and installation, marine cabinetry, coopering or drafting.Work is in a defined range of skilled operations, usually within a range of broader activities involving established routines, methods and procedures, where some discretion and judgement is required in the selection of equipment, services or contingency measures. Individuals collaborate with others to achieve quality outcomes and take responsibility for their own work. They may have some limited responsibility for the work of others.

Kitchen and bathroom installers must be licensed in some states, and induction training is required for those working on construction sites.

Pathways

Once students have successfully completed MSF30322 Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology, they can apply for various roles across furniture and cabinet making jobs.

The further study pathways available to students who undertake this qualification include:

• MSF40222 Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Manufacturing,
• MSF50322 Diploma of Furniture Design and Manufacturing, or
• Range of Certificate IV or Diploma level qualifications with the MSF Training Package.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Students may apply for recognition of prior learning or credit transfer for existing qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience. Granting course credit may reduce the duration of the course and may affect course fees. The process is set out in DIT’s Student Enrolment and Completion Policy and Training and Assessment Policy.

Units of Competency

A total of 29 Units (26 Core and 3 electives) must be completed and deemed competent to achieve the
qualification CPC30620 Certificate III in Painting and Decorating. Participants who achieve competency in any unit/s will receive a Statement of Attainment (provided USI is verified) for that unit/s without completing all 29 units in the qualification. Students completing all the required units of competency will attain full qualification.

Unit selection may vary depending on training package updates or student needs.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENT

The training product does not specify entry requirements. Darwin Institute of Trade applies the following entry requirements to this course. All applicants must meet each of the following.

• Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and individual student needs. The interview also assesses the applicant’s ability to use digital technologies.
• Educated for five years in an English-speaking country; or
• Have an overall IELTS score of 6.0, with test results no more than two years old. Other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL may be accepted. Applicants must provide their results so that Darwin Institute of Trade can confirm they are equivalent to IELTS 6.0.
• Have a suitable level of language, literacy and numeracy to complete course requirements with or without additional support that Darwin Institute of Trade (DIT) is able to provide.
• Must be a proficient user of advanced calculators.
• Have successfully completed Australian year 12 or equivalent or must be of matured age with adequate LLN skills.
• Are at least at age of 18 on the date of course commencement.
• Student must have access to working PC or laptop with a configuration suitable to meet study requirements.

• International students must maintain a valid visa and meet attendance and academic progress requirements.
